Services and Access for Patrons with Disabilities
The libraries are committed to providing access to information resources and services to all library users on an equal basis. To arrange appropriate individualized services at the Ralph Brown Draughon (RBD) Library, contact the Reference Desk at 844-1737.

Entrances
The Mell Street entrance located on the second floor of RBD Library is accessible through designated parking spaces behind Mary Martin Hall, a wheelchair ramp, and an automatic door.
The Roosevelt Drive parking deck has several designated parking spaces located on the third level which give access to the first floor entrance by way of an automatic door.
Elevators
All floors of RBD are accessible by elevators. Elevator controls are at wheelchair level and have braille indicators.
Telephones
A wheelchair accessible pay telephone is located on the first floor, and a TDD is available for use at the Reference Desk on second.
Restrooms
Designated accessible restrooms are available on all floors.
Water Fountains
Accessible water fountains are located on all floors.
Reference and Information Services
All reference and information service points provide assistance with library materials. Persons requiring extensive research assistance should contact the appropriate area in advance.

Photocopying
- Wheelchair accessible photocopiers are available on floors 1 through 4. For extensive assistance, library users should make arrangements in advance.
A wheelchair accessible microfilm reader/printer (which can be converted to read microfiche) is available on the first floor adjacent to the Service Desk. There are also 3 strengths of magnifying lenses available for all the reader/printers.
Other Resources and Equipment
- All CD-ROM workstations and at least one AubieCat terminal on first through fourth floors of the RBD Library are wheelchair accessible, as is the computer laboratory on the third floor.
- ZoomText for Windows -- Available ONLY on the AUBIEPlus workstations
- This software is designed to assist the visually impaired to view the computer monitor better. It acts as a magnifying glass over the computer screen. available ONLY on the AUBIEPlus workstations
- A newly renovated handicapped carrel located on the first floor of RBD Library (Rm 1298C) is now equipped with an adjustable workstation and computer. Available on the computer is Dragon Naturally Speaking, a voice-activated software which enables control of the computer entirely by voice. This is of great benefit for computer users with mobility problems. The carrel will also double as a testing facility to proctor exams for students who need special accommodations.
- Located on the first floor of RBD Library (Rm 1011) is a Closed Captioned Television (CCTV) and a scanner and computer workstation equipped with JAWS software. JAWS is a screen reader software specifically designed for blind or low-vision computer users. OPENBook is another software program available at this workstation. It enables blind and visually impaired individuals to read, edit, and manage scanned images from books, magazines, etc., and essentially turns your computer system into a scanning and reading machine.
- Wheelchair accessible individual study carrels are also available on the upper four floors of the RBD Library.
- Handheld lighted magnifiers are available at various service points on ground through fourth floor of the RBD Library and at both branches.
- A TDD-equipped telephone, a 4-track cassette tape player, and a Chroma CCD magnification unit are available through the 2nd floor Reference Desk.
