Series 1: Documents. Includes various subseries, e.g.:
General correspondence between family members and between various Rickenbackers and their friends, some of whom held social, political, and economic power in the United States. The largest part of this sub-series is the long-term correspondence between William and his parents that spans 1935-1978. There is a small amount of business correspondence in the collection as well as a number of condolence letters received upon the occasion of Eddie Rickenbacker's death in 1973.
Diaries and Trip Logs:
Eddie, Adelaide, and William kept diaries at various times in their lives. Eddie kept a diary concerning his and Adelaide's honeymoon in Europe in 1922 and William wrote over 400 pages while at Harvard in the late 1940s. In addition, both Eddie and Adelaide wrote reports of their trips after Eddie retired from Eastern Airlines in 1963.
Includes family legal papers, military service documents and official reports by Eddie, articles written by Eddie and Adelaide for the popular press, speeches, transcripts of interviews by producers of 1943 movie "Captain Eddie," obituaries and biographies of Eddie, Adelaide, and EVR's secretary Ms. Marguerite Sheppard.
Series 2: Photographs
This is the largest single series in the collection, with well over 1000 items. Includes very small photos, 5x7, 8x10, large-format, and panorama shots. Most of the photos document Eddie's activities as a race-car driver, World War I Ace, owner of the Indianapolis Speedway, owner/mamager of Eastern Airlines, and post-retirement speaker for conservative political causes. Others are photographs of Adelaide, David, and William Rickenbacker, and Eddie's siblings and parents. There are also approximately 148 still photographs taken in relation to the 1943 movie, "Captain Eddie," starring Fred McMurray and Lynn Bari.
Series 3: Scrapbooks
One sub-series consists of 26 large-format scrapbooks of newspaper clippings concerning Eddie Rickenbacker, 1913-1973. The clippings were produced by a clipping service. A second sub-series consists of family scrapbooks, mostly of trip and vacation photographs. The third sub-series consists of commemorative scrapbooks presented to Eddie, usually in connection with Eastern Airlines.
Series 4: Motion Pictures
Motion Pictures consist of a number of 7" and 3" reels of 16 mm movies shot of the Rickenbacker family vacations.
Series 5: Audiotapes
Reel-to-reel tapes of eulogies delivered at Eddie's funeral, particularly by Lowell Thomas.
Series 6: Microfilm
Microfilmed copies, produced by Auburn University Archives, of the newspaper clipping scrapbooks in the previous series.
Though not an official series, this category was created to alert researchers to the existence of large format items stored in a separate container. Norwegian maps used by Rickenbackers on their 1939 sailing trip are included here.
