Scope / Content: Diary kept by Thompson from January 1864 until August 1865, with brief daily entries noting Thompson's location, chief activity of the day, and the weather.

Biographical Sketch: Thompson, a native of Tyrone, Ireland, came to the United States prior to 1855 and became a U.S. citizen in 1862. He enlisted in August 1862 in Company B, 6th Minnesota Infantry. In June 1864, the regiment left Fort Snelling, Minnesota for Camp Buford, Arkansas. The regiment wintered in St. Louis from November 1864 to February 1865, when it was sent to New Orleans. In March, the regiment was sent to participate in the siege of Mobile, Alabama. In late April, the regiment was ordered to Montgomery, where it remained until July. It was then sent to Minnesota and its members mustered out of service.
