History: Philpott served as president of Auburn University, 1965-1980. He received his Ph.D. from Washington and Lee University in 1938, served as a chaplain in the Navy during World War II, then taught religion and served as an administrator at the University of Florida and Stephens College prior to his appointment at AU.
