| In 1878 Dowell graduated from Wake Forest College. He held various
administrative posts with the Alabama public schools during the early part
of his career.
In 1918 Dowell became Superintendent of Education in Alabama, a position which he held until his appointment as president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. He subsequently served as president of Mercer University. |
