Guide to the Alabama Farm Bureau Federation Records, RG 543

Date Span: 1922-1993

Organizational Sketch: Formed in 1921 as the Alabama auxiliary to the American Farm Bureau Federation with close ties to the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service at Auburn University. The Bureau withdrew from the American Farm Bureau Federation and in 1988 changed its name to Alabama Farmers' Federation. It functions as an advocacy and business group for its member farmers, and is organized on a county level

Scope / Content: Includes office files and correspondence; audio tapes of speakers at annual meetings; newsclipping scrapbooks; photographs of Bureau activities; video and audio tapes and films promoting Bureau programs; oral history with J.D. Hays, Alabama Farm Bureau President from 1961-1979; and publications. While the bulk of the office files/correspondence series span the 1960s and 1970s, the series includes correspondence of Walter L. Randolph, Bureau President, 1940-1961. Notable correspondents include James B. Allen, George Andrews, Glenn Andrews, John Bankhead, Tom Bevill, John Buchanan, Jr., William Dickinson, Jack Edwards, Carl Elliot, Walter Flowers, George Grant, Lister Hill, George Huddleston, R. E. Jones, Jr., John Martin, Bill Nichols, Edward A. O'Neal, Albert Rains, John Reswick, Kenneth Roberts, Armistead Selden, John Sparkman, and George Wallace. Also includes the Alabama Farm Bureau News and the minutes of the Executive Committee.
