| The main building, later named Samford Hall, is shown under
construction in 1888-90 after Old Main burned. Samford housed administrative
and faculty offices, and classes were taught there from 1890 until about
1969. While Samford was being built, classes were held next door
in Langdon Hall, hidden from view here by the Chemistry Building (now Hargis
Hall) at right. Hargis was completed while the main building was
still under construction. Young George Petrie taught six hours--French,
English, history, Latin, German, and Greek--on the first floor of Langdon
above the temporary mechanical laboratory. "The lathes, the saws,
and the planer roared all day, a discordant symphony beneath the professor's
lecture rooms, (and) a continual warning of the hereafter," Petrie later
