Auburn coeds of 1900-01, left to right, front row: Mabel Heard, Mollie Hollifield, L.M. Washington, Emma B. Culver.  Back row: Annie L. Wright, Lucille Burton, Kate Lane, Toccoa Cozert, Sallie Ordway, Ethel J. Harwell.

Auburn's first coeds were admitted in 1892, and Willie Gertrude Little, Kate Conway Broun, and Margaret Kate Teague were among the first to attend a state institution of higher learning in the Southeast.  At commencement exercises in 1894, Alabama Governor Thomas Goode Jones escorted each coed to the rostrum to receive her degree "amid thunderous applause." -- Photo: AU Archives
