Auburn's first coeds were admitted in 1892, and Willie Gertrude Little,
Kate Conway Broun, and Margaret Kate Teague were among the first to attend
a state institution of higher learning in the Southeast. At commencement
exercises in 1894, Alabama Governor Thomas Goode Jones escorted each coed
to the rostrum to receive her degree "amid thunderous applause." -- Photo:
