| Pictured are many Auburn students who rode a freight train
to Atlanta to see the basketball team play Ole Miss for the Southern Conference
championship in 1928. Auburn lost 32-31. W.R. Moon, at extreme
left wearing knit cap, recalled that a trainman opened some empty boxcars
at Auburn and told the student hobos, "Boys, just be careful." Moon
said the group marched in formation into Atlanta after getting off at East
Point. After the game, the students piled into boxcars on a west-bound
freight and returned to Auburn. Moon, sixteen, a saxophone player,
came to Auburn from Gadsden in 1926 and joined both the Auburn Collegians
Orchestra and the API Marching Band. Moon recalled in 1996 that in
addition to making every football game for four years, he "made enough
playing with the Collegians to more than meet the cost of tuition, books,
board and room, and other expenses." -- Photo: W.R. Moon |
