| Ralph "Shug" Jordan commiserated with Paul "Bear" Bryant
when they met after the 1972 game. Auburn's 17-16 victory made Jordan
one of the few ever to defeat modern football's winningest coach three
times in four years. However, Bryant held the upper hand, beating
Auburn thirteen times and losing only five during the Jordan years.
Jordan's record of 176 victories, 83 losses, and 6 ties earned him a place
in the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame along side Bryant and
others. Years earlier, during World War II, Jordan set a record few,
if any, other coaches could match: participating in U.S. Army invasions
in North Africa, Sicily, France, and Okinawa. -- Photo: Ralph Jordan |
