| The AU Gospel Choir posed at the Capitol with Congressman
Bill Nichols, far right, during its 1988 spring tour. The choir was
formed in the 1970s by the Black Student Union, and Dr. Claude Gossett
of the music department later served as its faculty advisor for more than
eight years. Gossett and his wife Sylvia, also a member of the AU
music department, are standing next to Nichols, an AU trustee for twenty
years who died later that year. During the tour, the choir, under
direction of Stephanie Banks of Birmingham, participated in the Black Music
Caucus competition at Martin Luther King High School, New York City, and
sang at a Baptist Church in Harlem, at schools in Philadelphia, and at
the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. -- Photo: Opelika-Auburn News |
