Catalog Maintenance

Maintaining a library catalog that accurately reflects a library's holdings is a time consuming task. Lost materials need to be withdrawn. When a book is transferred from one department to another (from the main collection to Special Collections, for example) the catalog needs to be updated to show the current location of the item. When a book is found in a place it just doesn't seem to belong, or is assigned a call number which is already being used for a different item, the book(s) must be re-evaluated and changes to correct the situtation must be made. All of these tasks, and others, keep our catalogs accurate and take place in the Catalog Maintenance Unit of the Catalog Department.

Librarian Helen Goldman is assisted in this work by library assistant Rose Grady and projects supervisor Dana Rollins and his students. Helen also leads the Authority Control Unit.
