Recording Serial Numbers for Computer Software
Some computer software requires the serial number to be entered in order to access or log into the CD-ROM or diskette it is on. The serial number can also be required for technical support. This serial number is usually located on the packaging, not on the disc or diskette itself. Because the packaging is usually discarded, it is necessary to add the serial number to the Voyager holdings record where it will always be linked to the software and not be lost. If it is on the holdings record, the reference librarians will not have to keep track of it separately and will be able to give it to the patron. Add the serial number to the Voyager holdings record in the 845 field before discarding the packaging. Acquisitions will send all packaging with the software from now on.
