Library Sources for Costume History

This guide is designed to assist in researching costume history. It offers several sources for beginning the research project, but the individual researcher will want to augment these suggestions.

Indexes and Databases

MLA(Modern Language Association International Bibliography)

Consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore, and includes coverage from 1963 to the present.

Art Abstracts

Covers archaeology, architecure, art history, city planning, crafts, graphic arts, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecutre, photograpy and films, and related subjects.


Microform Collections

New York Theatre, 1919-1961

Collection of 26,000 captioned photographs of stage productions of 1000 performers. The original collection of photographs is housed in the New York Public Library, Library and Museum of the Performing Arts. Set includes booklet which indexes the microfiche collection.

Seventy primary and secondary sources (books, periodicals, manuscripts, and diaries) in English, French, German, and Italian. Comprises 135 vols., some illustrated.

University of Bristol Theatre Collection

This collection consists of graphic material that chronicles theatre development from primitive times to the late 20th century.

Visual catalogue of Fashion and Costume in the Victoria and Albert Museum

This set comprises 57 microfiches in pockets in ring binder cover the years 1555-1955. It includes historical and informational notes.
