This book is a compilation of three major annual bibliographies issued
by the journal Women and Literature in 1976-1978. It includes an
appendix fromPMLA and Modern Language Research from
1979-1981.
A Biographical Dictionary of English Women Writers
1580-1720--
The entries are arranged alphabetically, but you have to remember to try
given names, married names, and titles. Helpful cross-references are
included. It suggests sources of further information. The editors admit that
the work is incomplete and has many gaps.
The Bloomsbury Guide to Women's Literature--
This book covers all literary periods from all parts of the world, and
operates on the idea that women have been writing all along but without
recognition. It includes several introductory essays about the time periods
covered. The format is one alphabetical list including authors, titles, and
movements.
British Women Writers: A Critical Reference Guide--
The entries include a biographical sketch, list of works, and a list of
references. The editors explain that their method of selection is not
systematic, but rather authors are included because they have received
little coverage elsewhere, they are innovative, or they represent small
groups.
The Feminist Companion to Literature in English: Women Writers
from the Middle Ages to the Present
Includes 500 word entries about women who wrote in English, but
disregards national boundaries. This book features a useful bibliography and
an index of topics included. There is also a chronological list of names and
an index of writers that includes cross references to other
names.
New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature--
This five volume bibliography is arranges by time period annd by subject
area within the time periods.
The Oxford Guide to British Women Writers--
Entries in this alphabetical listing of authors include an outline of
the author's life and career, major publications (if any), and significant
features of her work. It also includes a small
bibliography.
Pen Names of Women Writers From 1600 to the Present--
You can search by the author's given name or by the pen name. This book
does not include name changes resulting from marriage, and only includes
published writers.
Handbook of Pseudonyms and Personal Nicknames--
This book is made of one alphabetical list including both given names
and pseudinyms. It includes cross references to other
entries.
A Dictionary of Pseudonyms and Their Origins--
This book is a list of pseudonyms. Each entry includes the person's true
name and a brief explanation of who he or she is (or was).
A Dictionary of Pseudonyms and Pen-names--
This book includes two separate lists, one that goes from pseudonyms to
given names and one that moves from given names to
pseudonyms.
