Libraries and Collections at the AU Libraries

The Auburn University Libraries include the Ralph Brown Draughon Library (the main library also known as the RBD Library), the Library of Architecture, Design and Construction (Dudley Hall Commons in the Fine Arts Complex), and the Charles Allen Cary Veterinary Medical Library (Greene Hall, College of Veterinary Medicine, Wire Road).

The combined collections of the Libraries contain over 2.7 million volumes as well as 2.6 million government documents, 2.5 million microforms, and over 148,000 maps. The Libraries receive over 35,000 current periodicals, many which are available online. And the library provides access to over 227 electronic databases. Books are classified by the Library of Congress (LC) system and are arranged in open stacks by subject.

The Ralph Brown Draughon Library

The Ralph Brown Draughon Library is named in honor of Ralph Brown Draughon, president of Auburn University from 1947 to 1965, and a moving force behind the construction of the original portion of the Library. With the completion of a 207,000 square foot addition in 1991, the Library has a seating capacity of 2,500 designed to serve the study, teaching, and research needs of Auburn students, faculty, and staff.

Subject-specialist librarians are located on the 2nd floor of the RBD Library at the Main Reference Desk. Their services are available during regular operating hours and can be contacted by appointment or e-mail for help in using the library. The Circulation Desk is located on the 1st floor of the library at the parking deck entrance. There is an Information Desk on the 2nd floor of the RBD Library, and a Service Desk located on the 1st floor of the RBD Library for help in using micro- formats and government publications. There is also a Digital Resource Lab for assisting users with digital media, providing access to media hardware and software, together with on- site technical expertise. The Special Collections and Archives Department on the ground floor of the RBD Library houses 10,000 cubic feet of archival and manuscript materials. Special Collections and Archives have a reference desk for help in using the collections.

Computer workstations for accessing the World Wide Web and the Libraries' collections are located on every floor of the library. There is also an OIT computer lab on the 3rd floor and an Internet Café located on the ground floor. In addition, there are wireless computers available which can be checked out from the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor with a valid student, faculty or staff ID. Individual study carrels are located throughout the building.

Photocopying services are offered by the Copy Cat Center. The library Copy Cat office is located on the 2nd floor. Library photocopiers are located on each of the five floors, taking activated TigerCards or photocopy debit cards (Campus Cash cards). Group study rooms accommodating four to six persons are located on third and fourth floors of the Library and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Charles Allen Cary Veterinary Medical Library

The Veterinary Medical Library is located in Room 101 of Greene Hall in the College of Veterinary Medicine Complex on Wire Road. The Library is open to the public. All persons not wearing an official College of Veterinary Medicine identification badge are requested to sign a visitors' log upon entering.

The Veterinary Medical Library provides services and collections which primarily support the teaching, clinical applications, and research of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Secondarily, the Library assists other Auburn University faculty, staff and students, especially in the fields of agriculture, biological sciences, home economics, nursing and pharmacy. Additionally, the Library supports the animal health information needs of the Charles S. Roberts Diagnostic Laboratory, Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, United States Department of Agriculture Regional Lab for Fish Diseases and Parasite Research, Alabama Department of Forensic Medicine, and veterinary practitioners. The Veterinary Medical Library maintains over 30,000 volumes and approximately 500 active serial subscriptions. The materials held by the Library reflect current research and informational needs. Library staff provide a courier service for pickup and delivery of older and lesser-used materials housed in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. The Veterinary Medical Library will help identify and obtain materials not held by AU Libraries through interlibrary loan and various other electronic networks.

The Veterinary Medical Library reference collection includes many specialized indexes and abstracts as well as scientific dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias, and manuals. The Medline database provides efficient access to the literature of over 3,000 biomedical periodicals. This database is updated monthly and contains information available from 1966 to the present month. CAB Abstracts furnishes bibliographic references and abstracts for the world's agricultural literature. CAB contains information from 1984 to the present. By request, the Veterinary Medical Librarian will search other specialized databases for a cost recovery fee.

Library of Architecture, Design and Construction

Located in Dudley Hall Commons adjacent to the Graves Amphitheatre at the end of Bibb Graves Drive, the Library of Architecture, Design and Construction houses a collection of materials covering architecture, interior design, building science, industrial design, landscape architecture, community planning, and art. The 35,000 volume collection complements but does not duplicate fine arts materials held in the RBD Library and includes over 85 current periodicals. A collection of over 80,000 slides including architecture and landscape architecture, decorative arts, visual arts, interior and industrial design is available for use by faculty and students. The LADC houses two scanners for patron use one large format scanner and an 11 x 17 scanner.

The Library of Architecture, Design and Construction reference collection contains specialized reference tools including encyclopedias, indexes, dictionaries, catalogs, and handbooks relevant to architecture and related disciplines.
