Censuses in AU Libraries
Clicking on the Census number will run a subject search in AubieCat, the Auburn University Libraries Online Catalog. These listings include the Libraries' holdings of both the statistical and manuscript censuses. Remember, the manuscript census is released only after seventy years have passed, making 1930 the most current release. Also, Auburn primarily selects the manuscript census for Alabama and selected counties of other mainly southeastern states.Soundex film is only available from 1880-1920. For more statistical resources for the 1990 and 2000 censuses, including population estimates, go to the Bureau of the Census web pages as much of the Census '90 and Census 2000 is available on the web.For historic statistical information see the University of Virginia Geospatial and Statistical Data Center's United States Historical Census Browser, 1790-1960. This includes total, white, free African American and slave populations, churches, education and literacy, vital statistics, and economic data. Data collected varies by census. See the Historical Background for information on the various censuses. Finally, the Bureau of the Census' webpage of selected historical population and housing counts includes questionaires, instructions, and histories of the various censuses.
For a table of the census questions asked in the 1960-1990 censuses, go to Appendix A (table beginning on page 192) of the book (published online by the National Academy Press) Modernizing the U.S. Census (Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, 1994). The University of Minnesota Population Center provides the questions online for the 1850-2000 censuses.
