Does purpose matter?Sometimes figuring out the purpose of a piece will help answer several of the questions on this decision tree. The "why" something was developed lends itself to the format and objectivity. So, start with the question "Does the material give an answer I can use?" and then ask yourself:Is the author's purpose to inform?
Does he or she present new information?
Does he or she discuss current or historical events? Is the author's purpose to explain?
Does he or she describe a process?
Is he or she trying to teach? Is the author's purpose to persuade?
Do the authors want to change your mind?
Are they trying to convince you to buy?Is the material appropriate?
What is the audience the author is aiming for?
Is the material age appropriate?
