A GEOLOGIC MAP OF THE SEA FLOOR IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS BAY, CONSTRUCTED FROM DIGITAL SIDESCAN-SONAR IMAGES, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND SEDIMENT SAMPLES.
I 19.121:3
U.S. Geological Survey 1992The objective of this study was to map the texture and morphology of the sea floor in western Massachusetts Bay. Knowledge of the sediment distribution in coastal areas adjacent to major population centers is useful in many ways. Contaminants have a strong affinity for fine-grained sediments in coastal waters, and maps that define areas of fine sediment help predict where contaminants may have accumulated in the past and where they are likely to accumulate in the future. The maps also yield information about the habitats of important marine organisms that utilize specific sediment types for food and protection. In addition, knowledge of the distribution and thickness of coarse sediments such as sand and gravel is essential to evaluate their potential as a mineral resource. Maps and data included on this disc include: a general map showing sonar lines and geographic boundaries, a bathymetric contour map with contours in feet, a geologic map with general sediment types, a digital mosaic of sonar images showing individual features, a reference map, and sediment texture data.
- File Format: Two types of data on this disc -- Klein imagery and bathymetry data -- are both in two different formats. The Klein data are in a full-resolution, processed binary file format as well as a compressed format for display purposes. The bathymetry data are in an ASCII file format as well as in a format which is used with the display software.

STRATIGRAPHIC NOMENCLATURE DATABASES FOR THE UNITED STATES, ITS POSSESSIONS AND TERRITORIES
I 19.121:6
U.S. Geological Survey 1992
The Geologic Names Unit (GNU) offices (Denver, Colorado; Menlo Park, California; Reston, Virginia) of the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) are compiling data on nomenclature applied to stratigraphic units used in the United States, its territories, and possessions into a computer-based system. The system is known collectively by the acronym GNULEX (Geologic Names Unit Lexicon). Staff members of GNU review USGS manuscripts early in the publication process for stratigraphic nomenclatural use. This new computer system was designed to provide each staff member with ready access to information published by the geologic profession; it may also serve as a tool for non-staff geologists to use. The nomenclature database may be searched by formation name, state, age, province, and lithology. Searches may also be limited to a particular part of the country (Far West, Midwest, East with Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico).

DIGITIZED STRONG-MOTION ACCELEROGRAMS of NORTH and CENTRAL AMERICAN EARTHQUAKES 1933-1986
I 19.121:7
U.S. Geological Survey 1992
Many agencies are currently collecting and distributing digital strong-motion accelerograms in North America, and many have done so in the past. With their help, we have amassed a data base of 1,477 mostly three-component station recordings from about 500 earthquakes occurring before 1987. These data represent all of the available North American and Hawaiian records written by ground-level instruments. They have all been copied into a uniform file format, with one file for each component of the recording station: each file includes information about the earthquake and recording station. The complete set of data files is available on a CD-ROM optical disc. The database may be searched by latitude, longitude, date, epicenter distance, depth, peak acceleration, moment magnitude, and general magnitudes.

MODERN AVERAGE GLOBAL SEA-SURFACE TEMPERATURE
I 19.121:10
U.S. Geological Survey 1993
The purpose of this data set is to provide paleoclimate researchers with a tool for estimating the average seasonal variation in sea-surface temperature (SST) throughout the modern world ocean and for estimating the modern monthly and weekly sea-surface temperature at any given oceanic location. It is expected that these data will be compared with temperature estimates derived from geological proxy measures such as faunal census analyses and stable isotopic analyses. The results can then be used to constrain general circulation models of climate change.
The data contained in this data set are derived from the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Multichannel Sea Surface Temperature data (AVHRR MCSST), which are obtainable from the Distributed Active Archive Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. The JPL tapes contain weekly images of SST from October 1981 through December 1990 in nine regions of the world ocean: North Atlantic, Eastern North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Agulhas, Indian, Southeast Pacific, Southwest Pacific, Northeast Pacific, and Northwest Pacific. This data set represents the results of calculations carried out on the NOAA data and also contains the source code of the programs that made the calculations. The objective was to derive the average sea-surface temperature of each month and week throughout the whole 10-year series, meaning, for example, that data from January of each year would be averaged together. The result is 12 monthly and 52 weekly images for each of the oceanic regions. Averaging the images in this way tends to reduce the number of grid cells that lack valid data and to suppress interannual variability.
As ancillary data, the ETOPO5 global gridded elevation and bathymetry data (Edwards, 1989) were interpolated to the resolution of the SST data; the interpolated topographic data are included.
The images are provided in three formats: a modified form of run-length encoding (MRLE), Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), and Macintosh PICT format.
Also included in the data set are programs that can retrieve seasonal temperature profiles at user-specified locations and that can decompress the data files. These non graphical SST retrieval programs are provided in versions for UNIX, MS-DOS, and Macintosh computers. Graphical browse utilities are included for users of UNIX with the X Window System, 80386-based PC's, and Macintosh computers

NATIONAL GEOCHRONOLOGICAL AND NATURAL RADIOELEMENT DATA BASES
I 19.121:14
US Geological Survey, 1995
Item: 621-k 95-006-E
This CD contains two data bases from the US Geological Survey:
Natural Radioelement Data Base contains data on the uranium, thorium, and potassium concentration from over 8500 saples taken from locations all around the country. The data base is organized by states and countries. Within each state, the county, quadrangle, location, sample number, laboratory number, RaeU(ppm), Th(ppm), K(pct), rock description, latitude and longitude, and submitter are given if known. Although a specific reference is not given for each sample, a list of references is included and the submitter's name may be searched to find more complete information about the sample.
National Geochronological Data Base is a group of computerized files established by the U.S. Geological Survey as a means of collecting and organizing published isotopic ages from the United States. For each dated sample reported in a published work, a record containing information on sample location, rock description, analytical data, age, interpretation, and literature citation is constructed. Such information pertinent to the major dating methods (K-Ar, Ar-Ar, Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Re-0s, U-Th-Pb, Pb-alpha, and fission track) can be accommodated, singly or in combinations, for each record. As of May 1994, NGDB consists of more than 18,000 records containing over 30,000 individual ages, which is believed to represent approximately one-half the number of ages published for the United States through the year 1991.

This CD contains composite digital sidescan-sonar mosaics and geologic maps of the deepwater parts of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern Caribbean Sea. The mosaics provide the first broad-scale view of the sea floor and help us to understand sedimentary processes that have been unknown or poorly known until recently. These images have been published in paper atlases at a scale of 1:500,000 as U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series I-1864-A, B (1987) and I-2054 (1991). The geologic interpretations of the images are expanded from those in I-1864 and I-2054.
The data on this disc consist of the fully processed GLORIA sidescan-sonar images, geologic interpretations of the images, bathymetry overlays for the images, 21 seismic profiles collected in 1978 along the Atlantic continental margin, and a three-dimensional perspective of the entire eastern Atlantic. The GLORIA data on this disc were collected during 10 cruises between 1982 and 1987 for regions where water was more than 400 m deep.

I 19.121:30
US Geological Survey(1995)
The results of the 1995 National Assessment of Oil and Gas Resources of the United States are presented in an interactive CD-ROM. The interactive nature of the National Assessment CD-ROM allows the user to browse through the documents and presentations, choosing items of interest in user-selectable order. The USGS National Assessment is an unbiased and scientifically based estimate of the quantity of oil and gas yet to be discovered and of the past and future growth in hydrocarbon reserves onshore and in state waters. The National Assessment describes the sources of oil and gas, where they are, what technology may be needed to recover them and at what price, and at what rate they can be withdrawn. Knowledge of oil and gas resources is necessary for strategic planning, evaluating Federal lands, and developing sound economic, energy and environmental policies.

SPATIAL DATA EXTRACTED FROM THE MINERALS AVAILABILITY SYSTEM/ MINERAL INDUSTRY LOCATION SYSTEM (MAS/MILS)
I 28.151:12-95/CD
Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines
The Minerals Availability System (MAS) was established by the US Bureau of Mines in 1975 to ascertain the potential supply of selected mineral commodities. The goal of the system is to measure resources available at various prices by inventorying major deposits, characterizing applicable extraction processes, and calculating recoveries and costs. The MAS/MILS database on CD-ROM is the result of the inventory process. The MAS database describes over 5,000 significant mines, deposits and minerals processing plants around the world with operation specific feasibility evaluations. The Mineral Industry Location System (MILS), provides location and identification information on about 22,000 (mostly US) mineral sites. Only selected, non-proprietary portions of the MAS/MILS database are contained on this CD.
