The Auburn University Board of Trustees created the Auburn University Archives in 1963 to document the history of the University and to collect unique source material on Alabama history. Holdings total more than 12,000 cubic feet of archives and manuscripts, including still photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings. University records date from the school's opening in 1856 to the present. The department also has strong holdings and an active collecting policy on the history of agriculture and rural life in Alabama, which overlaps with Auburn University's historic mission as a land-grant institution. Materials related to twentieth-century Alabama politics, Alabama architecture, Alabamians in the Civil War, Alabama writers, and the history of aviation also appear in the collection.
