Employment Eligibility

Student Assistant positions are part-time (usually less than 20 hours/week) positions. Only currently enrolled AU students may apply for these positions--students who have graduated or otherwise withdrawn from school are not eligible. Applications are accepted throughout the year and kept in a pool for the current semester or summer session. As vacancies occur the supervisors for those positions inform the Administrative Offices, the pool is reviewed and applicants are contacted for interviews. We have always operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, trying to match up the student's available hours to our individual supervisor's needs. Student Assistant application forms are available in the Administrative Offices on the second floor of Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

Employment Forms

There are five (5) forms to be filled out by you, the employee, for hiring purposes. These forms are: a state tax withholding form, a federal tax withholding form, a personal data form, a local information form and an I-9 form to be filled out and returned to the Administrative Office within three (3) days of the date of hire. You will not be allowed to work until your I-9 information is complete. You cannot be paid for hours already worked until all other forms are turned in to the Administrative Office. You must present your Social Security card upon employment.

Evaluations/Raises

Students are given annual evaluations, although some library departments reserve the option of more frequent evaluations. Quality and quantity of work, aptitude for learning, cooperation, initiative and punctuality are among the areas evaluated. The evaluation that you receive will be kept in your personnel file. Raises will be given to reward exemplary job performance as appropriate. Your work habits will determine your status in re-employment each semester or summer session. Therefore, good work habits established now will be an asset in the future.

Discipline

You will need to consult your supervisor regarding disciplinary policies/procedures specific to the unit, department, or branch library you will be working in. However, two (2) unexcused absences will result in termination.

Grievances

If you believe you have a legitimate complaint, you should discuss it with your supervisor. If that does not prove satisfactory to you, the normal procedure is then to go to your unit or department head or chair and next to the Human Resource Associate, located in the Administrative Offices (second floor of the RBDL).
