Update on the Reorganization Plan

by Stella Bentley

Implemenation of the Library Reorganization Plan is underway in a number of areas, so I would like to provide a brief report of what has happened or is underway:

Interviews are being held for the Assistant Dean positions, and as soon as these positions have been filled we will proceed with the internal recruitment for the Department Chairs of the four new or reconfigured departments -- Access Services, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Reference and Information Services.

Planning for a fee-based service is underway under the direction of Cindy Mitchell.

We have contracted for the CARL Uncover unmediated article delivery service, and plan to implement it  October 1.  We have also added a site license for the  CARL Reveal service, which will enable AU personnel to set up individual profiles to receive via email the current tables of contents from up to 50 journals and  to establish up to 25 search strategies.

The Access Services personnel are planning shifts of personnel and operations to merge reserves and circulation functions and  to create space for the stacks maintenance unit and the security unit.

Job descriptions are being created and reviewed for central stacks maintenance and security positions.

E-reserves is being implemented in RBD, and will be operational with the beginning of the fall quarter.

A small working group is developing a plan for integrating the current gifts and exchange operation into the regular acquisitions and cataloging workflows.

The University Press plan profile is being reviewed by collection managers, and we expect to begin receiving shelf ready UP materials beginning with  1999 imprints.

We have ceased keeping some statistics which are not required for any of the official reports we must submit.

A small working group is developing the plans for streamlining the pre-order process, with a planned implementation date of October 1st..

The Preservation Committee is looking at criteria for microfilming material in the library and  developing a job description for a preservation coordinator.

We are testing some Voyager 97.2 capabilities in preparation for further streamlining of some of our processing operations.

A workshop will be held August 31-Sept 2 for all technical services personnel with a consultant from Solinet.  The focus of the workshop is teamwork in technical services, streamlining workflow, and making maximum use of the capabilities and features of OCLC and Endeavor.

Cross training has begun in some units.

The New Book area has been moved.
