With a touch of fall in the air, Auburn fans start thinking football. The arena on campus for playing the game, Jordan-Hare Stadium, turns 60 years old this year. There have been many changes in those years to make it large enough for the crowds that travel far and near to celebrate the game. Seating capacity in 1939 was 7,500 and today can seat 85,214. The stadium had had three names: 1939---Auburn StadiumIt was named for Clifford Hare who was on the first football team in 1892 and taught chemistry at Auburn for 50 years. He was president of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Also named for Ralph "Shug" Jordan, who played for Auburn (A.P.I.) in 1928 and continue on during his college years. "Shug" became Auburn's head freshman coach in 1932. He became Auburn's head coach in 1951 with a salary of $12,500.00. He has the record for being the "winningest" football coach at Auburn. The football display continues with the Tuberville Team, featuring Tommy Tuberville and the new assistant coaches. It features pictures (courtesy of Archives) and books on Auburn football and Auburn tradition. I would like to invite you down and maybe you can catch the "Auburn Spirit."
