About This Survey

A Collaboration:

The Continuing Education Committee of the Science and Technology Section (STS) of the Association for College & Research Libraries (ACRL) normally conducts a survey every two years to identify the continuing education interests of its constituents. At the January 2004 ALA Midwinter meeting the Continuing Education Committee, mindful of the rapid changes taking place in its constituents' work environments, decided to conduct a "hot topics" survey in 2004 to continue the work of the 2003 survey. At the same meeting Virginia Baldwin, a member of the Special Libraries Association and the American Society for Engineering Education Engineering Libraries Division as well as STS, proposed a collaboration of the three organizations in conducting the survey. All three associations worked together to design the survey. The analysis of the 254 responses presented here is the result of that collaboration.

Data was collected from Oct. 21, 2004 through Nov. 17, 2004. The survey was publicized through the listservs of the three organizations. In order to gather a wide range of interests, colleagues were personally asked to fill out the survey and submit it to others and to other appropriate listservs. The resulting suggestions represent the wide range of interests and responsibilities of the science and engineering librarians at work today.

The survey was prepared by Marilyn Christiainson, Terri Freedman, and Chet Bunnell. Analysis was done by Marilyn Christianson. The Committee wishes to thank all who took part.

Data Summary as Collected

Interest Categories Rated on Likert-Like Scales:

Attendance Plans, Summary:

In the survey section, "Three Most Important Topics," respondents reported not only subjects from the Likert-like-scale list but also their own ideas. Any ideas that could not easily be expressed by the topic are listed here in addition to being counted in their respective aggregated topics.

A study of these suggestions yields a treasure of continuing education ideas.
