Searching for Articles

All databases are available on campus and remotely unless otherwise noted.  To access a resource from home, you will need to type your Auburn user ID and your related password. Use of the older library ID is being phased out.

Subject Databases

MathSciNet, 18?? - present
Main body of index/abstract: 1940 -.
Recent "expansion" indexing leads to:
1. Older material now full-text on the Internet.
2. Applied statistics and computer science peripheral to mathematics.

Web of Science, 1945 -
aka Science Citation Index aka Web of Knowledge
Indexes the most-cited journals in the world. All subjects.
See who has cited an article or book.

Zentralblatt MATH, 1868 -
Longest running Math indexing and abstracting service.
Short abstracts instead of the longer reviews of Mathematical Reviews, but the abstracts of Zentralblatt have historically appeared faster, and have tended to match the author's abstract.

Who has cited....?

MathSciNet 18?? - present
Many articles now have their references included in the MathSciNet indexing.
Example cited reference search:

Web of Science, 1945 -
aka Science Citation Index aka Web of Knowledge
Choose: ISI Web of Science

Cited Reference Search

Zentralblatt MATH Citation Checker

Citeseer
Uses automated indexing to provide relatively broad, inexpensive, and rapid citation indexing.
Warning! A visual mess that does not clearly delineate its contents.
Try it anyway.

Applied Mathematics Databases

INSPEC, 1968 -
Scholarly literature for physics, electronics, and computer science.
Good for topics such as elliptic curve cryptography, coding theory, etc. .

Current Index to Statistics, 1975 -
Some earlier materials included.
Largely social sciences statistics, but also engineering, biological, and biomedical.

Finding the Older Literature

Catalogue of Scientific Papers Compiled by the Royal Society of London
Index to 19th-century scientific literature.
PDF files that are apparently non-searchable. Gather your patience! You will need to browse.
RBD Library has print copies as well.

SciFinder Scholar aka Chemical Abstracts etc., 1907 -
Includes a great deal of biology, biochemistry, food science, medicine, agriculture, etc.

Current Awareness Services

Current Contents, 1996 -
Quick indexing of the latest important scholarly journals in science.
Contact your Library Specialist for the special URL needed to set up email notification of new articles.

Ingenta
Multidisciplinary, quick-and-dirty indexing.
Many articles can be faxed to Auburn faculty and graduate students or opened directly.
Auburn instructions.

Help!
Is something wrong with your reference? Has Interlibrary Loan returned your request because it doesn't seem to exist? Auburn Biological Sciences students and faculty should contact their library specialist for help.
Abbreviation Lists:
Online:
MathSciNet [current] List of Abbreviations
Zentralblatt Math Serials and Journals List
JAKE
Only for journals in aggregator databases.
You have to have the first several letters of the first word right.
WorldCat
A small unscientific test of journal abbreviations from the Web of Science found slightly over half of their abbreviations in WorldCat, the largest collection of library catalog information in the world. Here is an example search:

Still Desperate? Only full titles can be found on here, but judicious guessing can be done:
ISI Master List of Periodicals.
Only for journals indexed in ISI products such as Web of Knowledge (aka Science Citation Index aka Web of Science) and Current Contents.
