Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online (EB Online includes the complete encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year.  You can also use EB Online to search an Internet directory that includes more than 130,000 links to Web sites selected, rated, and reviewed by Britannica editors.)

Indexes and Databases 

All databases are available on campus and remotely unless otherwise noted.  To access a resource from home, you will need to type your library ID and last name.  Your library ID is usually: two, zero, your Social Security Number, then zero.  For example:  A person with the Social Security Number 123-45-6789 has the library ID:  201234567890

Subject Databases

Contemporary Authors

MLA (Modern Language Association International Bibliography) (Produced by the Modern Language Association of America, the MLA International Bibliography indexes critical scholarship on literature, language, linguistics and folklore. Coverage includes journal articles, series, monographs, dissertations, bibliographies, proceedings and other materials. The database includes all records indexed from 1963-Present, approximately 1,200,000 records. Requires library ID for off campus access.)

Literature Online (Chadwyck-Healey) A database of databases that includes editions of full-text literary works, indexes to criticism, and links to internet resources.  The most comprehensive full-text database for literature.  The library's subscription includes the following selected databases:   Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, Periodicals Contents Index: Literature, African-American Poetry (1750-1900), Twentieth Century African-American Poetry (1901-1998), American Poetry (1600-1900), Twentieth Century American Poetry (1901-1997), Early English Prose Fiction (1500-1700), Eighteenth-Century Fiction (1700-1780), English Drama (1280-1915), English Poetry (600-1900), and Modern Poetry (1972-1997).  Only available on campus.)

LLBA - CSA (Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts) (Subjects covered include: linguistics and language behavior, applied linguistics, phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology, interpersonal behavior and communications, phonetics, hearing and speech physiology, hearing (pathological and normal), language (pathological and normal), learning disabilities, mental retardation, psychopathology, special education and psychometrics. 1973-Present. Requires library ID for off campus access.)

JSTOR (JSTOR provides access to the backfiles of scholarly publications covering the social sciences, humanities, and sciences. JSTOR includes the full runs of each journal,generally up to 1-7 years from the present. A sophisticated search engine supports full-text and cross-disciplinary searching of the journals and presentation of page images allows viewing of the articles exactly as they appear in print.  Requires library ID for off campus access.)

Poem Finder

Project Muse (Full-text of over 40 print journals in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics from the Johns Hopkins University Press covering 1990-present. Includes journals such as Configurations, Diacritics, and The Yale Journal of Criticism. Only available on campus.)

Twayne Authors Series

Women Writers Online (The Brown University Women Writers Project is a long-term research project devoted to early modern women's writing and electronic text encoding. The chief  goal of the database is to bring texts by pre-Victorian women writers out of the archive and make them accessible to a wide audience of teachers, students, scholars, and the general reader.   Only available on campus.)

General Databases

Academic Search FULLTEXT Elite (Covers abstracts and indexing for over 3,000 scholarly journals and features full text articles for over 1,200 journals since 1990. Requires library ID for off campus access.)

Alabama Major Microforms Collection (A listing of the majority of the major microform collections held by alabama academic libraries. A joint project of NAAL (Network of Alabama Academic Libraries) and Auburn University.)

Biography and Genealogy Master Index (Biography and Genealogy Master Index is a comprehensive index to nearly 12 million biographical sketches in more than 2700 volumes and editions of current and retrospective reference books, covering both contemporary and historical figures throughout the world. Requires Library ID for off campus access.)

Dissertation Abstracts (1861 – Present.  The years 1998-1999 are available off campus, but earlier years are only available on campus.)

InfoTrac's Expanded Academic ASAP (Indexes 1500 journal titles in a variety of subject areas.  Articles in over 500 journals are full text. 1980 – Present. Requires library ID for off campus access.)

WorldCat (Records of any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. Includes manuscripts written as early as the 12th century. Useful for identifying sources not held by Auburn University Libraries. Requires library ID for off campus access.)

Current Awareness Resources

Reveal (An automated alerting service that delivers the table of contents of periodicals or results of keyword searches directly to your e-mail address.  Available to AU faculty, graduate students and staff.)

UnCover (A database of article information taken from over 18,000 journals that allows faxing of articles not owned by AU Libraries. Available to AU faculty, graduate students and staff.)

Citation Database

Arts and Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science provides access to current bibliographic information and cited references from over 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. 1984 – Present.  Only available on campus.)

Jack London Society

An international non-profit organization that promotes study of the life and work of Jack London, was founded in 1990 as an author society affiliated with the American Literature Association, a coalition of author societies. It numbers over 300 members and continues to grow each year. Membership is open to anyone interested in London.

Modern Language Association

Founded in 1883, the Modern Language Association of America provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarly findings and teaching experiences with colleagues and to discuss trends in the academy.

New Chaucer Society

The purpose of The New Chaucer Society is to provide a forum for teachers and scholars of Geoffrey Chaucer and his age. To advance such study, the Society organizes biennial international congresses of Chaucerians, publishes the annual Studies in the Age of Chaucer and a semiannual newsletter, and supports such important projects as the Variorum Chaucer, the Annotated Chaucer Bibliography (an electronic version of which is available on-line), and the Middle English Dictionary Project. Participation in NCS congresses is restricted to active members of the Society.
