[edit] How do I schedule a library instruction session?
First, decide whether you would like to devote an entire class period to a facilitated library instruction session, or if you would prefer to assign an activity for students to complete on their own. Next, determine the date on which you would like to schedule the session and contact Melanie Brooks no less than two weeks prior to the requested date. Two weeks notice is the minimum requirement; it is recommended that you request your session as far in advance as possible because the library instruction labs are in high demand.
[edit] How does a facilitated library instruction session work?
After you have scheduled your session, a library instructor will volunteer to lead the class. The library instructor will contact you to discuss your instruction options and determine a meeting place for the date of the session.
[edit] What are my library instruction options for UNIV 1000 and UNIV 1050?
Several instruction options are available for your classes:
[edit] Option 1: Ethnographer for an Hour (Library Discovery Tour)
Instructors schedule a facilitated library instruction session during class time. Students are divided into teams and each team explores one of the library floors. Each team is given a blank map of the floor they are assigned to investigate. After the students have had time to explore the floors, the class meets in an instruction lab and each team reports their findings to the class.
Learning Objectives: Students discover library services and physical layout through hands-on exploration and collaborative sharing.
Length of Time Needed: 50 minutes. Please devote an entire class period to this session.

[edit] Option 2: Library Webpage Introduction (Webpage Discovery Activity)
Instructors schedule a facilitated library instruction session during class time. The webpage introduction offers the same kind of discovery concept as option 1, except the class period is spent in an instruction lab and students explore the library’s homepage in groups.
Learning Objectives: Students discover library services through hands-on exploration and collaborative sharing.
Length of Time Needed: 50 minutes. Please devote an entire class period to this session.

[edit] Option 3: Podcast Tour
This tour does not require a facilitated library instruction session. On the library instruction page there is a podcast library tour that students can download to their MP3 players. This tour is an activity that students perform on their own, and there are accompanying worksheets to check students' recall after they have completed the tour. MP3 players are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library.
Learning Objectives: Students are introduced to major library service points through individual guided exploration and recall activities.
Length of Time Needed: The podcast lasts approximately 10 minutes. The time needed to complete the worksheet will vary among students; however, estimated completion time is 10 minutes.
[edit] Option 4: RBD Library Flickr Photo Tour
This tour does not require a facilitated library instruction session. On the library instruction page there is a link to the RBD Library Photo Tour hosted on Flickr. This tour is an activity that students perform on their own. The tour is interactive and provides a multitude of information about services available at the library.
Learning Objectives: Students are introduced to major library service points through individual web exploration and recall activities.
Length of Time Needed: The amount of time needed to complete the photo tour will vary among students; however, estimated completion time is 10-15 minutes.
[edit] Option 5: Brief Introduction to Library Resources (UNIV 1050 only)
Instructors schedule a facilitated library instruction session during class time. Students receive brief instructions on keyword searching within a general database using a topic such as time management from the UNIV 1050 course. After the introduction, students perform hands-on searches within the database and record their findings on a worksheet. Students are required to locate and print one relevant article on the topic used in the search.
Learning Objectives: Students begin to learn to navigate within a general database through hands-on experience with a specific, predetermined topic. (The instructor and library contact work together to choose a relevant topic.)
Length of Time Needed: 50 minutes. Please devote an entire class period to this session.
