Library Exhibit on African-American Spirituals

The Special Collections and Archives Department has mounted an exhibit to enhance the February 28 lecture by Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell on “The African-American Spiritual:  Song Creating Community.”

Located in the three large standing glass cases on the north side of the department (facing Samford Hall), the exhibit features numerous photographs, books, sheet music, song transcriptions, and art work concerning the history of African-American spirituals.

The Special Collections and Archives Department is located on the Ground Floor of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

Library Exhibit: WAPI Radio Station

In September 1922 WMAV (”We Make a Voice”) began radio broadcasting on this campus.  In 1926 the radio station became WAPI (”W” plus “Alabama Polytechnic Institute”).  The Special Collections and Archives Department has mounted an exhibit located in five flat glass cases featuring the early history of WAPI radio including numerous photographs, program transcripts, telegrams, correspondence, and other documents. 

The Special Collections and Archives Department is located on the Ground Floor of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

Coffee at Betty and Chet’s

Betty and Chet’s is a mini-cafe located on the Second Floor of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library by the Mell Street entrance.  They offer Starbucks coffee and delicious pastries and treats for sale.

Hours of Operation:

Monday – Thursday 7:45 a.m. – 2 a.m.

Friday 7:45 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Saturday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Sunday 1 p.m. – 2 a.m.

Psychiatry Online

Psychiatry Online provides online access to the main publications of American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. including the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), and The American Journal of Psychiatry.  In addition to various psychiatric references, including books, journals, and self-assessment tools this database provides online versions of the following journals:  The American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Academic Psychiatry, The Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences, and Psychosomatics.

Movies, Music, & More 

A list of movies, music, and more available at the First Floor Circulation Desk in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.  The database consists of a listing by format including audiobooks; music available in cassette tape; L.P. (long playing phonograph records),;and C.D. (compact disc); and movies available in videocassette and D.V.D. (digital video disc) format.

Income Tax Page

April 15 is approaching!

The Income Tax Page provides online access to federal, state, and even international income tax information, forms, instructions, etc.  The Income Tax Page is located under the Subject Guides link located on the left hand side of the A. U. Libraries homepage.

Articles and Databases Link Redesigned

The Articles and Databases link located in the upper left hand side of the A. U. Libraries homepage has been redesigned for easier access to and easier visibility of the numerous databases available to library patrons.

USA.Gov Replaces FirstGov

The FirstGov database has been replaced by the USA.Gov database.  In 2000 the federal government created FirstGov to serve as the centralized portal for providing electronic access to government information.  Deciding that a name change was due, the federal government has changed the name of this portal to USA.Gov.  The renamed database continues to provide online access to resources such as the Government Printing Office including:  The Federal Register; Congressional Records Service; and Legislative Service.

Reference Guide to Africa: A Bibliography of Sources

Edited by Alfred Kagan and published by Scarecrow Press in 2005, this is the Second Edition.  Located in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library on the Second Floor under call number DT 4 .R44 2005.  The 1998 (First Edition) is also available electronically via the NetLibrary database.
