AUBIEcat Timeout Warning

Avoid the frustration of having the Auburn University Libraries’ online catalog, AUBIEcat , timeout on you!

There is now a “Session Timeout” notice that appears in the lower left hand side of the screen that provides a timeout warning count-down (five minutes).  The script warns you that a timeout is imminent, allowing you to restart the timer by refreshing the page being viewed.

If you take no action before the session times out, a warning dialog box appears in the upper left hand side of the screen, giving you a chance to start a new search.

Click on the “Books and Journals” link in the upper left hand side of the A.U. Libraries homepage to use AUBIEcat, the online catalog.

Ithaka 2006 Survey of U.S. Higher Ed. Faculty Attitudes and Behaviors

Recently added to the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) database is the data set, “Ithaka 2006 Survey of U. S. Higher Education Faculty Attitudes and Behaviors” (Study No. 22700).

This study was conducted in order to contribute to community understanding of the attitudes and behaviors of higher education faculty members regarding online resources, the library, and related topics.  This study, from 2006, builds upon similar studies performed in 2000 (by JSTOR) and 2003 (by Ithaka), and may be compared with data on many of the same topics gathered from librarians in 2006.  This survey covers a wide range of topics, including the relationship between faculty and their campus library, faculty dependence on electronic scholarly resources for research and teaching, the transition from print to electronic for scholarly journals, faculty publishing preferences, e-books, digital institutional repositories, and the preservation of scholarly journals.  This study also offers a descriptive overview of faculty attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, and preferences.  Demographic variables for faculty include age, gender, instititon size, discipline affiliation, and number of books published.

The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, also known as ICPSR, provides search and browsing access to abstracts and data sets in the world’s largest archive of computerized social science data.  Search or browse title of study, principal investigator, words in the abstract, or study number.  Browse major research categories.

ERIC Web Site Redesigned; New Journal Coverage

ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) released a redesigned web site on August 3.  Highlights include:

1)  A major restructuring with clearer features, more intuitive paths to information

2)  A completely new and expanded Help section that includes brief tutorials, a glossary, and a searchable index

3)  Help tools have been integrated into the ERIC web site

4)  A new section, “For Librarians,” consolidates information of interest to the library community into a single location.

5)  Lighter visual design, so pages load faster and new graphics refresh the site while retaining ERIC’s look and feel.

In addition, ERIC has added more than 3600 new records from newly acquired journals (130 new journal titles) from 2004 onward.  Once these recent titles have been acquired and indexed, ERIC will acquire 2002-2003 electronic back issues of previously indexed titles to prevent gaps in journal coverage.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) provides free access to bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials and, if available, includes links to full text.  Coverage dates back to 1966 with some citations from earlier dates.
