The Auburn University Libraries recently acquired a letter documenting Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, thus bringing an end to the Civil War.  On April 9, 1865 Lee met Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and on April 10 Grant sent Lee a letter describing the terms of surrender.

This important Civil War letter from Grant to Lee came to Auburn University through the generosity of James L. Starr, a 1971 graduate in Chemical Engineering.  The manuscript is currently on display in a flat glass exhibit case near the entrance to the Alabama Collection room in the Special Collections and Archives Department, located on the Ground Floor of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.
