2015 Discover Auburn Lecture Series
Invasive Ants of Alabama: A Tale of Two Species
Lawrence "Fudd" Graham, Ph.D., Auburn University Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture
Date and Time: Thursday, October 22 at 3 p.m.
Location: Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium, Ground Floor, Ralph Brown Draughon Library
In this Discover Auburn lecture, Dr. Graham will discuss the introductions of two invasive ant species to Alabama. The imported fire ant, now common throughout the Southeastern United States, arrived through the Port of Mobile in Alabama in the 1900's. A new invasive ant species, the tawny crazy ant, was found in southern Alabama in 2014. With super-colonies containing multiple queens and an ability to survive fire ant venom, the tawny crazy ant has the potential to impact Alabama in numerous ways. Come learn about Alabama's invasive ants.
