(A Sketch of the 47th Alabama Volunteers and its Services in the C.S. Army)

Scope / Content: Burton based his summary of regimental losses on a sketch by William C. Oates, author of The War Between the Union and the Confederacy (1905). Consists of a fifteen page handwritten undated narrative sketch of actions involving Company H, 47th Alabama Regiment from May 22, 1862 to April 9, 1865. The Battle of Chickamauga is given special emphasis. It also gives a summary of losses for all companies of the regiment.

Biographical Sketch: Burton, from LaFayette, Alabama, enlisted in Company I of the 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment when it was formed in May 1862. He was elected Captain of Company H, 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment, in November 1862, and served until its surrender at Appomattox in April 1865. After the war, he opened a book and stationery store in Opelika, Alabama.
