Terry Bowden, sopping wet from perspiration, celebrates
Auburn's 36-33 come-from-behind football victory over Florida at Gainesville
in 1994. The Gators, No. 1 nationally, had won seventeen straight
at home and were a sixteen-point favorite. Auburn trailed by four
points with thirty-six seconds remaining when Patrick Nix lobbed a pass
from the Florida eight between two defenders to Frank Sanders, who leaped
and caught it for a touchdown. Thirty seconds later, unbeaten Auburn
had won eighteen games since Bowden became head coach and all since bing
placed on NCAA probation before the start of the 1993 season.
The Tigers won two more before being tied by Georgia, 23-23, and ending
the season with a 21-14 loss to third-ranked Alabama. Auburn, off
probation in 1995, went 8-3 in the regular season, including a 31-27 triumph
over Alabama that made the Tigers 3-0 against Bama in games played at Jordan-Hare
Stadium. Then came an embarrassing 43-14 loss to Penn State in Tampa's
Outback Bowl January 1, 1996. -- Photo: AU Athletic Department |
