The Journal of Sarah Haynsworth Gale, 1827-1835
Date and Time: Tuesday, September 23 at 3 p.m.
Location: Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium, Ground Floor, Ralph Brown Draughon Library
The journal of Sarah Haynsworth Gale, wife of early Alabama Governor John Gale, is among the most widely studied and seminal accounts of antebellum life in the American South. Gale refused to mince her words, and her lively opinions offer entertaining and illuminating insight on her society and its people. Her journal was so revealing that descendants attempted to conceal portions by defacing pages and excising portions of text.
Sarah Woolfolk Wiggins is professor emerita of History at the University of Alabama, a past-president of the Alabama Historical Association, and editor of The Alabama Review for twenty years.
Sponsored by: Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts, and the Auburn University Libraries.
